Knotilus Bringing Back the Art of Macramé

Knotilus Bringing Back the Art of Macramé

Jessica Stark began doing macramé in elementary school when string boxes were the “in” thing. Jessica is bringing back the trend with Knotilus, her business handcrafting macramé pieces.

As a kid, Jessica and her friends would spend hours making friendship bracelets, anklets and necklaces for each other. Within the last six months, she decided to pick the skill back up and challenged herself to make a wall hanging for her husband’s birthday.  In the process, she rekindled her love for the craft of macramé.

Jessica’s favorite pieces to create are large intricate wall hangings that incorporate different materials such as shells, beads and feathers. Some of her pieces even light up! She recently started collaborating with Lotus Island Threads to make macramé pieces for their handmade bathing suits. Jessica loves the fact that the possibilities in the craft of macramé are endless.

Local Maker Turns Pallets into Home Décor

Local Maker Turns Pallets into Home Décor

Sometimes a hobby just falls into your lap. That’s what happened to Tim Pollock when he bought a house in 2012 along with an oversized garage filled with tools and a workbench.

Seeing an opportunity in what some might have discarded as leftover “stuff,” Tim started tinkering with woodworking and even decided to refinish his hardwood floors. Tim spent the next two years experimenting with shelving and signs. His interest was piqued and he took a part-time job installing wood floors. This improved his skills (and comfort level) working with different saws.

These days, he has taken his newfound woodworking talents to the next level. Tim works out of his garage in St. Augustine with his two children, a 7-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son, who assist their dad in Pollock Pallet Designs’ mini assembly line. The kids help rip up pallets and Tim sands and stains.

Morgan Kelly Uses Puppets to Unlock the Imagination

Morgan Kelly Uses Puppets to Unlock the Imagination

Puppets come to life when Morgan Kelly combines the visual with performing arts.

Kelly discovered puppetry while she was studying theatre in undergrad. She said she remembers a moment about 15 years ago when she thought puppetry would keep her endlessly curious. And it has.

However, Kelly’s interest in puppetry dates back to her childhood when she would bring objects to life using her imagination. Maybe she just didn’t call it puppetry at the time.

Kelly began formalizing her passion when she studied Theatre at Marlboro College in Vermont. She then solidified her specialty with a graduate degree from New York University in Educational Theatre. Her graduate work taught her ways to share her skills with kids in schools and different educational settings. Kelly loves watching the kids connect with puppets as she says they seem to understand them the best!
